weekends in the city: sundays

today was filled with a soccer birthday party OUTSIDE the city – we have now left boston two weekends in a row! (often months will go by without leaving the city.) ernesto picked up the zipcar yesterday afternoon and we motored on down to the party this morning. a soccer party filled with children under the age of five and their attendant parents. after running around for 45 minutes, jack inhaled four pieces of pizza and a piece of cake with blue frosting. needless to say, he fell asleep within minutes of getting onto the highway to return to the city. the weekend flew by and I have a grueling schedule planned for this week.

I would love to hear from people on children’s themed parties – I just finished writing out invites to jack’s pirate party — Kathy – please send me any tips you have from Gabriel’s pirate party a couple of years ago.

Photos will be posted later tonight – ciao!

  1. My art teacher decorates for kids’ parties at the AA Rec & Ed
Center, and last week she showed me the life-sized
    (six-year-old life-sized) painting on a flexible canvas
that she did, of a jaunty pirate, leaving the face a hole.
She hangs this up so that each of the wee party attendeds
can have a turn standing behind the canvas and peering out
through the hole to have their pictures taken as pirates.
Got any arty friends who could whip up a whimsical painting
of a pirate? The pirate party she was doing was to be held
last weekend. I can ask her this week for more details,
    if you like.

  2. ooooooooooh! I love this idea. I’m also trying to think of arts and crafts projects for the kids to work on – 3-yr-olds — decorate your own pirate ship? pin the sail on the ship or pin the eye-patch on the pirate

  3. We got pirate hankercheifs and skull necklaces which everyone wore including the adults. We played walk the plank – jumping off a step on the back play structure which we turned into a ship including Jolly Roger flag. We had a treasure hunt with treasure maps where the prizes were the gift bags. We created Pirate Names for people which were on their nametags – we used a page from the How to be a Pirate picture book. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Gabriel’s party is Egyptian theme this year so if you have any ideas for that one let me know- I’m not sure if we can get away with match the organ to the correct canopic jar game- it might scare the parents(:

  4. great suggestions. ooh, egypt, very cool – i will think on this one – henna tattoos, middle eastern food, recreation of either the nile/felucca or of the sphinx/pyramids with the backyard play structure. btw – we received your gift box and we’re waiting until friday 🙂
